چکیده

Repeated high-resolution multibeam bathymetric surveys from 2002 through 2006 at the head of theMonterey Submarine Canyon reveal a sandwave field along the canyon axis between 20 and 250 m water depth. These sandwaves range in wavelength from 20 to 70 m and 1 to 3 m in height. A quantitative measure was devised to determine the direction of sandwave migration based on the asymmetry of their profiles. Despite appreciable spatial variation the sandwaves were found to migrate in a predominantly downcanyon direction, regardless of season and tidal phases. AyearlongADCPmeasurement at 250mwater depth showed that intermittent internal tidal oscillations dominated the high-speed canyon currents (50–80 cm/s), which are not correlated with the spring–neap tidal cycle. Observed currents of 50 cm/s or higher were predominantly down-canyon. Applying a simple empirical model, flows of such magnitudes were shown to be able to generate sandwaves of a size similar to the observed ones. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Internal bore seasonality and tidal pumping of subthermocline waters at the head of the Monterey submarine canyon

This study utilizes more than a year of observations made in shallow waters ( 30 m) at the head of the Monterey Submarine Canyon to assess variability in the physical environment and internal bore field. The interaction of the internal tide with the canyon rim results in a semidiurnal tidal period pumping of cold–water masses (subthermocline waters) onto the adjacent shelf (i.e., internal bores...

The Effect of Event Sequences on the Characteristic of Turbidity Current Deposits

Similar submarine canyon systems exist on scales ranging from less than a kilometer to nearly 1000 km. The shallowest end is a submarine canyon and canyon head(s). Further down the canyon is buried by the upper part of a submarine fan with meandering and cross-cutting channels. The fan eventually merges with a nearly flat-lying depositional basin. We have used the deposits associated with these...

Article history: Received 28 July 2015 Received in revised form 19 January 2016 Accepted 20 January 2016 Available online 26 January 2016 Monterey Bay, California (CA) receives nutrients from multiple sources, including river discharge, upwelling of deep water, and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). Here we evaluate the relative importance of these sources to Northern Monterey Bay with a mi...

Heavy mineral investigation of Carmel Bay beach sands

This investigation was conducted in order to identify the heavy minerals of the beach sands of Carmel Bay, and to analyze the distribution of these minerals, Carmel Bay offers the opportunity to study heavy mineral assemblages in a small isolated bay, internally divided by a submarine canyon, containing smaller pocket beaches influenced by several geological formations and two fresh water strea...
